Agricultural Tractor Serial Number Location, by Maker

On most agricultural and compact utility machines the serial number sits on a plate on the main frame near the front axle, on one side or the other, and the maker decides which side. Bobcat states that on its sub-compact and compact tractors the serial number is on the front right corner of the frame. A 2024 US recall notice for three John Deere compact utility models puts the serial number on the frame, on the front right side, near the engine. Mahindra's eMax recall notice puts it on the right side of the frame above the front axle. But the number a parts counter asks for is often not the only one it needs, and the location moves between series and model years.

That is the part almost nothing on this subject says out loud. There are several numbers on an agricultural tractor, they live in different places, and they answer different questions. Reading off the wrong one is how a person leaves a parts counter with a component that will not fit.

The five numbers on an agricultural machine, and what each one is for

Number What it identifies Where it usually lives
Model number The machine family, not your individual machine Decals, the hood, the operator manual cover, the identification plate
Serial number or PIN Your individual machine The identification plate on the frame
Engine serial number The engine as a separate assembly Stamped or plated on the engine itself
Component serial numbers A major assembly such as the transmission A separate plate on that assembly
Build year The year the machine was made Frequently not on the machine at all

Two of these regularly surprise owners. The first is that a model decal can be a family name rather than the full factory designation. Kubota states on its engine support site that the engine model name is not printed or stamped anywhere on the engine and that it is found in the illustrated parts list, which means the label you can see is not always the identifier the catalog is organized by. The second is that major assemblies carry their own numbers. LS Tractor USA's operator manual states that the tractor and its major components are identified with Product Identification Number plates. When a counter asks for a second number, that is usually why.

Underneath all of it sits an industry numbering convention. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers describes the World Manufacturer Code as "three alphanumeric characters to be part of the product identification number (PIN) for off-highway equipment," each code unique to one manufacturer, and points to ISO 10261, Earth-moving machinery, Product identification numbering system, as the guidance standard for non-road mobile equipment identification numbers.

Start with the paperwork, not the machine

Before anyone walks out to a shed, the number is very often already written down somewhere dry and at eye level. The purchase invoice or bill of sale normally carries the serial number, because the dealer needed it to register the sale. So does the warranty registration, the finance or lease agreement, and in most cases the insurance schedule. If the machine was bought new from a dealer, that dealer's service department has it on file against the customer account, and manufacturers run owner portals where a registered machine appears with its identification number attached.

This route costs nothing, involves no hot surfaces and no crouching, and it is the shortest path for most readers. Kubota's own customer FAQ for the US market makes the same point from the other direction: if the serial number is difficult to locate, or the model is not one of the ones listed, the local dealer can supply the information.

Before you walk out to the machine

If the paperwork route fails and the plate has to be found in person, the conditions come first, because several of these plates sit in genuinely unpleasant places.

Park on level ground. Set the park brake. Shut the engine off and take the key. Lower any loader, three-point hitch implement or raised attachment fully to the ground, or support it by the means the manufacturer specifies for that machine. Never put any part of your body under heavy equipment that is held up by hydraulics or by nothing at all.

Plates that sit under the hood or low on the frame near the engine are close to the exhaust manifold, the turbocharger and the coolant system. Those surfaces stay hot long after shutdown, so let the machine cool. Plates on the rear of the machine can be close to the power take-off shaft, which is one more reason the engine is off and the key is out before anyone reaches in.

Do not remove a guard, a shield or a safety cover to see a number, and do not climb on tires, steps or linkages to reach one. If the plate is behind a guard, or you cannot see it without putting yourself in an awkward position, that is where this stops and the dealer takes over. If you are unsure how to do any of this safely on your machine, do not do it.

Every entry below is what that manufacturer or a US regulator's recall notice actually publishes. All of these sources were read on September 2, 2026, and all of them describe machines sold in the United States or North America. Markings and plate conventions differ by market: in the European Union, for example, Regulation (EU) No 167/2013, which has applied since January 1, 2016, requires the manufacturer to affix a statutory plate to each agricultural or forestry vehicle built to the approved type, so a machine sold outside North America may carry a different plate in a different place.

Some makers do not publish plate locations to the public at all. New Holland, Case IH, Massey Ferguson through AGCO, and KIOTI route owners to the operator manual for the specific model or to a dealer instead. That is not an oversight to work around. It is the honest answer for machines whose plate position changed several times across a production run, and guessing on their behalf is exactly how a reader ends up searching the wrong end of a machine.

What the serial number encodes, and what it does not

A serial number is first of all a unique identifier. Whether it also carries a readable build year depends entirely on the maker and the era, and this is the single most misreported thing about the subject. Year-from-serial tables circulate widely, often for one narrow model range, often unattributed, and they get applied to machines they were never about.

Where a maker does publish structure, it is worth reading precisely. Kubota's engine support site describes an older format of "4-6 numbers that are sequential with no breaks for production month or year," and a newer format introduced in 1997 in which the first digit indicates production year and the second indicates production month, with serial numbers expanding to seven digits from June 1, 2012. Note what that does and does not give you: a single digit for the year does not tell you which decade, and it describes engine serial numbers rather than the machine serial number. Kubota also warns against using the model information shown on emissions labels.

So this article does not publish a decoding scheme, for any brand, and no reader should accept one that is not attributed to the maker of their machine. If you need the build year for a warranty claim, a registration, a resale listing or a part that changed mid-year, the manufacturer or an authorized dealer looks it up against the serial number. That is a phone call, and it is the only answer that is worth anything.

When the plate is missing, painted over or unreadable

Plates get repainted with the machine, corrode off, get sandblasted, or leave with a panel that was replaced. Several routes remain.

The engine is the strongest one, because the engine serial number is stamped or plated separately, and on many machines it survives everything that happened to the frame plate. Kubota publishes serial number locations by engine series, and other engine makers document theirs in the engine manual. The dealer network is the second route: a dealer that sold or serviced the machine has records against the customer, and a dealer parts department can sometimes work from an engine number, a transmission number and clear photographs of the machine. Whether that is enough to identify it is the manufacturer's or the dealer's decision, not the article's.

Two cautions. Clean a faint plate gently, with a cloth, not with an abrasive or a solvent that could take the stamping with it. And do not fabricate, re-stamp or replace an identification plate yourself: identification markings are what a manufacturer, an insurer and a police report all rely on, and replacement plates are something the manufacturer issues through its own process.

Where to stop and confirm

Finding a number is not the same as identifying a machine. Once you have it, verify the identification and the part it points to with the equipment manufacturer, the owner's manual for your specific machine, or a qualified equipment professional before any part is ordered or fitted. Locations vary by series and by year, plates are sometimes replaced, and a number read correctly off the wrong plate still buys the wrong component.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the serial number on a compact utility tractor?

Most commonly on the main frame near the front axle. Bobcat publishes the front right corner of the frame for its sub-compact and compact tractors. A 2024 US recall notice for the John Deere 1023E, 1025R and 2025R puts it on the frame, front right side, near the engine. Mahindra's eMax notice puts it on the right side of the frame above the front axle. Confirm against the operator manual for your model.

What is the difference between a model number and a serial number?

The model number identifies the machine family. The serial number, sometimes called the Product Identification Number, identifies your individual machine and is what warranty, recall and parts records are indexed by. A model decal is not always the full factory designation, which is one reason a parts counter asks for the serial number as well.

Can I work out the year of an agricultural tractor from its serial number?

Sometimes, and only if the maker of that machine publishes the structure. Undocumented year-from-serial tables are the most common source of wrong answers on this subject. If the build year matters, ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to look it up against the serial number.

Why does the parts counter want the engine number too?

Because the engine is a separate assembly with its own identifier, and so are other major components. LS Tractor USA's operator manual states that the tractor and its major components carry Product Identification Number plates. Engines and transmissions also change during a production run, so the machine serial number alone may not settle which version is fitted.

What if the identification plate is gone?

Start with the purchase invoice, the warranty registration, the finance paperwork or the selling dealer's records. If none of those exist, the engine serial number is usually still there, and a dealer can advise whether the numbers still on the machine are enough to identify it. Do not make or fit a replacement plate yourself.
